How?

If you ask online gurus, you’ll get the same old-school advice:

  • get them to know you - tell a personal story, share personal details

  • get them to like you - make it relatable, emotional, vulnerable

  • get them to trust you - add some facts and figures

While this is generally valid, it’s not enough for Substack.

Yes, you need to influence them to take that decision at that very moment. But you also need to make them stay with it.

Substack is a subscription-based service. It’s not a one-time sale. So the only thing that will put you among those bestsellers and keep you there is this:

Relationship building

People connect with people.

It’s emotional.

It’s a bond.

It’s in all of the five elements of success on Substack:

the five elements of success on substack

Depending on which senses are involved, you can influence people in four ways. Here’s they are in order of their influential power (lowest to highest):

  1. Text - posts, emails, chats, threads

  2. Voice - calls, voice-overs, podcasts

  3. Visual contact - images, videos, webinars, workshops

  4. Physical touch - meetings in person - the most powerful interaction

When you write, your power of influence is the lowest low. Lowest. All you have is your words. That’s what you get on most writing platforms (like Medium).

But not on Substack?

You can connect with your audience in all four ways. Even physical contact. On Substack or outside of Substack. Because you have direct interaction with the people on your list you can get creative about it.

How are the bestsellers doing it?

My research on what type of offers do the bestsellers use, revealed community building to be at the top of the list.

Wonder why?

It’s all about relationships.

That’s the glue that keeps people paying.

Here’s a list of ideas I’ve seen bestsellers doing:
