Your offer.

That’s where you need to start on Substack. It’s not growing your subscribers and then think how to monetize them. It’s the opposite.

That’s how you keep your conversion rates high.

Right now my conversion rates are growing at above Substack average level (5%-10%). But that wasn’t the case when I started.

It takes time to get there.

Here’s how it developed by acquisition channels:

substack conversion rates by channels
I keep track of my conversion rates in that table to be able to measure by acquisition channels, and especially to be able to isolate the effect of imported accounts where the rates are lowest

My conversion rate from Substack organic channels is above 10% which is something I aimed for.

The conversion rate is also the reason why I don’t recommend gaining subscribers externally and importing them to Substack. The rates are lowest low, which is understandable since these people are new to Substack.

If you need help with growing on Substack organically, join my Notes30 Challenge - it has my whole strategy on how to use Notes and interact with others on the platform to grow consistently.

But before you get there, you need to have your Substack set and your paid offer clearly defined.

Why?

Simple.

If you don’t have a good offer for paid subscribers, people won’t buy when they’re most ready to buy: the moment they subscribe.

After that moment, your chances are slim.

Start with your offer first.

That's what I did first.

And that's what got me a Bestseller badge in just 3 months!

How your Substack journey should look like:

  1. Research - read my research about consistency and what people pay for

  2. Build your irresistible offer - this post

  3. Set-up your Substack for a high conversion rate - watch this mini-course

  4. Gaining new subscribers, that are most likely to convert - join my Notes30 Challenge

  5. Convert them to paid with value and consistency - read my Write2Sell Column

  6. Make sure you retain them with engagement - coming up in the Write2Sell Column

About research…

I’ve done extensive research on Substack bestsellers and I made some interesting discoveries:

  • About what people pay for on Substack - read more here

  • About how often should you write - read more here

  • And some case studies - read more here

But…

As much as I’d like to help, still you need to do your own research within the niche you’re in. You can get some inspiration about how to do it and what to look for from my posts above.

Once you’ve done that, you’ll be ready to build your irresistible offer.

Before we deep dive, one thing I need to make clear:

If you’re just sharing your experiences, you’ll find it difficult to monetize. People pay because they need something in return.

Don’t get me wrong: your experiences are your diamonds. But that diamonds need to be polished. You only need to transform them into an irresistible offer. One that’s a no brainer to buy.

Here’s what your checklist looks like:

irresistible offer elements

Now let’s get more clarity on each of those elements.
