Few weeks ago I took a course from Tim Denning about Substack.

He opened it with a personal story (I love those) about how he started writing.

His first hustle was to write for a huge blog with lots of traffic. When he discussed his assignments with the blog owner he got a request to finish his articles with a CTA leading to a newsletter.

Tim hesitated this.

But the owner said he’d refuse to work with him if he doesn’t have a newsletter.

This story kinda stuck with me…

Every writer needs a newsletter!

I’m now a firm believer. It’s why I started my Substack, you can read about my first steps there in this story.

But I also find the idea of atomic newsletters particularly interesting.

What are atomic newsletters? A format of newsletters where you share 3 to 5 bullets with something interesting on a certain topic. I see some cool benefits in that:

  • they take just a few minutes to write — you can simply add links to Medium articles that impressed you while reading, and you read on Medium anyway, so no need for extra effort.

  • they take just as much to read — as a super busy person, I love them coming to my mailbox. They simply rock.

  • they’re super engaging — if you run them right your readers’ gonna love them.

I got this idea from Jamie Northrup and I also know Christina runs a similar newsletter. I’m a subscriber to both and I love them — they’re super crisp and sharp. I read at least one of the three pics in each of them.

Two days ago Christina read one of my pinned articles on Meidum and loved it. She decided to share it on her list.

How cool is that!

I got so excited! Thank you so much once again for that, Christina!

As expected yesterday it was in my inbox!

So today I was curious about what happened to the story stats. I rushed at it in the morning to see this:

views rads and earning on medium.com from email marketing
credit: author

I got 21 views, and 17 reads with the amazing 82% read ratio!! And a nice uplift in the earnings too: $2.46 vs. almost nothing on a regular day.

That’s how much money you can earn if you share your articles with your newsletter subscribers. So if you wonder how to increase your Medium performance, consider running a newsletter.

Do you have one?

Thanks for reading!
