Hi Kathleen, I have been in this space, which can be debilitating. I felt this throughout my PhD journey, despite so many wonderful reassurances by friends, faculty, and my dissertation chair. I half-jokingly said during my graduation speech, "I want to get out of here before you decide my degree was a mistake!"

Thanks for sharing such a timely and appropriate post!

I do understand, Dr. Taylor. Mine wasn't in medical school, but in nursing school, it was rough. I think they're more lenient now but back then it was very hard. So glad we both made it through.

I agree about the leniency. Seems like education is getting softer, at least in certain fields. (and just call me Larry. No need for the Dr routine. Just another guy who's had a crazy thirst for learning.

If you over-index on data, you don’t develop taste—you eliminate it. When every decision is based purely on numbers, you end up with products that look the same, feel the same, and function the same. There’s no artistic differentiation—only statistical optimization.

This isn't my typical weekly post. But... it's a necessary one.

Hi Warren, I tried to click the link, but it gave an error. Just pointing it out. Maybe it's on my side?

Warren Wojnowski's avatar

The link is working for me.

Is anyone else having trouble with it?

Nir Hindie's avatar

Now it works. Strange. In any case, just wanted to let you know :)

This isn't my typical weekly newsletter, but an update that my publication name has changed to 'Deirdre's Diverse Collection and Insights' - from 'Deirdre's Medium Stories (Writer in the Abyss)'. The new publication name reflects the evolving nature and objectives of the publication. Nothing else has changed just the name.

Cinematic storytelling is hard to define in academic terms, but easier to give examples of, like this one.

Not entirely related, but this made me think of Walt Disney’s approach to building Disneyland. He designed it with a cinematic vision, ensuring every detail felt human and immersive, driven by storytelling rather than just functionality. I went there last summer to experience it again, after I read his bio.

Thank you for sharing this Nir. I didn't know this about Walt Disney but I love his thinking. He wanted to give people a unique experience.

And I feel the best storytellers are the ones that rouse emotions in you rather than writers who tight plotters, and cinema is the same.

You may not always remember exactly what happened in a great film but you'll always remember how it made you feel.

Happy it helped. In that case, you might want to check this piece I wrote about it. 👇🏽

I loved it Nir. I love this quote in particular.

“The most important aim of any of the fine arts is to get a purely emotional response from the beholder.”

That should be the aim of creativity and storytelling.

Yes! he is among a few founders and business leaders who understand the importance of art in business. That's why I believe there is something called "Business Artistry."
